A bit of history...

In 1900, Passeig de Gràcia was the most important avenue in Barcelona and it was for this reason that in 1905, a wealthy industrialist named Pere Milà commissioned the architect Antoni Gaudí to build his new property where we can today visit Casa Milà – La Pedrera.

Casa Milà was completed in 1912 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Today it is a building located in the L'Eixample district of Barcelona, which houses the Catalonia La Pedrera Foundation and constitutes one of the most important tourist attractions in Barcelona. It is also called “La Pedrera”, which in Catalan means “The Quarry” due to its rustic appearance.

As shown in all of Gaudí's masterpieces, from the Sagrada Família to Park Güell as well as in Casa Batlló, La Pedrera's construction is also characterized by organic and natural forms that follow his well-known style: Modernism Catalan.

During this project, the modernist Antoni Gaudí was at the peak of his career and it was his last civil project before beginning work on Sagrada Familia. However, Gaudí abandoned the project before it was completed, as the architect and Father Milà repeatedly disagreed over tastes, and the non-angular shapes of the rooms proved a problem in finding tenants for the rooms.
